During the summer months the entire coastal area which begins behind the north pier of Porto Corsini (headquarters of a very prestigious yatching club) and ends at the mouth of the Lamone river comes to life in a colourful and creative way thanks to the aficionadoes of this sport.
During summer SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard – a board similar to a surf board on which one paddles standing up) reigns supreme, and the typical seasonal calm winds offer beginners the ideal conditions to try.
But it is during spring and autumn that windsurfers, kitesurfers and surfers, as well as those engaging in SUP in the midst of the waves, find the best weather conditions.
The sea storms and winds coming from the southern quadrants (particularly the Scirocco) bring high waves, and the pier of Porto Corsini regulates them well thus guaranteeing ideal conditions for expert riders.
When the winds blow from E, N/E and N there are often difficult conditions, even for the most expert enthusiasts.
The month of June and the second half of August are typically the best periods for engaging in these sports, with frequent afternooon breezes whose intensity suffices to guarantee wave action and adequate wind to make the kites rise and the windsurf glide.
Areas like Boca Barranca, next to the mouth of the Lamone river, Bagno Romea, Bagno Aloha and Bagno Marisa are particularly crowded with surfers and persons who engage in SUP, especially during days when there are waves; surfing classes are held at Adriatico Wind Club.
